Informative Email from Sgt. Opdyke

Neighbors,

If you are a victim of a crime or want to report suspicious activity or persons, please call our dispatch center (9-1-1) from either your mobile or hard line phone. We need to send an officer out to conduct an investigation and arrange for any evidence work to be completed, this is vitally important for the purpose of documentation, evidence collection and hopefully apprehension.

I appreciate the emails that I receive, however, our email system is not intended to report crimes for official documentation. The purpose of this email is to share information, Q&A regarding whatever issue is concerning your community. I am constantly receiving emails from residents reporting subjects looking into cars, prowling or that they are the victim of a crime and thinking that their email will lead to an official crime investigation. Our RPD Communications Center is the system in place to dispatch police officers to crimes in progress or to initiate an investigation of a crime that has already occurred.

Based on when a citizen sends an email, I may not read an email until it is three or four days old. Therefore if you see or hear anything suspicious that you want to report or you want to report that you are a victim of a crime…call 9-1-1. So, if you have been a victim of a recent crime and you have not called our Communications Center to have an officer respond, please do so sooner rather than later.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope that your Thanksgiving was wonderful.
