April 13, 2011:
At the 4/13 MBNC mtg, Alan Wolken of Richmond Redevelopment Agency, detailed the current status of the 1.5 mile improvements planned for the stretch of Bay Trail that goes through our neighborhood around several of our subdivisions’ perimeters. Plans are underway to widen the trail at all points to 10′ standards which are current standards … a couple feet wider than when the trail was first created two decades ago. One shoulder will be 4′ of decomposed granite and the other shoulder will be 2′ of same. This will effectively create a 16′ trail. All bollard lighting will be redone. Plans are underway to bury all electrical lines deeply and properly this time around, now that we all know copper wire theft has been a major problem with the previous shallow, accessible system. Landscaping will be all native plants. There will be upgraded seating along the trail. The project is now being planned in three segments or stages, due to economic issues that have beset California and our county and city.
The bid has gone out and Redevelopment is working with the lowest bidder for the area called Segment B (Shimada Park east to the bridge by Meeker Slough). City Council is expected to approve the plans in May, in June the bid will be awarded and work will begin in July; completion is expected in early 2012 (taking approx. 7 months to complete). EVERYONE IN THE AREA WILL BE NOTIFIED AS TO TRAIL CLOSURES. Signage will be placed showing rerouting of trails for cyclists and pedestrians. The contractor plans to keep the trail open on weekends as there will be no work performed on weekends.
November 2010:
Some recent good news: the final draft of the Bay Trail Improvement Plans are ready. Staff is looking to put on BidsOnline in early December & commence the bid. Official title is “San Francisco Bay Trail Restoration Richmond Redevelopment Area 11-A South Shoreline Marina District” (aka South Shoreline Trail). You can always stay current with plans for this (and other neighborhood projects) by clicking on: http://ca-richmond2.civicplus.com/index.aspx?NID=949.
Vallier Design, http://www.vallierdesign.com/, is working on a design for the electrical improvements and landscaping work. This work will commence as soon as possible and is exclusive of the South Shoreline Trail Project. Meantime, following are some documents for your perusal while we continue to gather information, schedules, etc. for this important project to put on this page:

Following an aggressive removal of iceplant material in the rocks and near Shimada Park by volunteers of Richmond ’s “The Watershed Project,” the Agency is now working on an Emergency Plan to have power reconnected to three Irrigation Controllers (two in Shimada Park at the edge of the SF Bay Trail and one at Promontory Point) and the areas promptly re-landscaped. Landscaping will conform to the plant material approved in the South Shoreline Trail Plan. The controller at Promontory Point would be integrated into this system rather than to the Solar Panel operated controller system that was erected, then rejected and ultimately taken down at this location. Vallier Design is working on a design for the electrical improvements and landscaping work. This work will commence as soon as possible and is exclusive to the South Shoreline Trail Project.
